Reflectors

New to the Dohse Aquaristik range are top-quality aluminium reflectors which, with their honeycomb structure, ensure the best light distribution of fluorescent tubes. The material properties and optimally angled design produce over 100% more light in aquaria and terraria. With just three lengths, used individually or in combination, all lengths of commercially available T8 and T5 fluorescent tube lengths can be catered for. The reflectors are supplied pre-assembled with metal clips for T8 fluorescent tubes, metal clips for T5 fluorescent tubes are included in the pack.

 

60th Anniversary

Dohse Aquaristics, founded by Hans Dohse and in its third generation, is now run by his grandson Axel Pinders and celebrates being 60 years old in 2009. In 1949 the company founder could not have foreseen what it would have become 60 years later. Inspired by his own grandfather, who was a professor of biology, Hans Dohse set up his first aquarium at the age of twelve. After the Second World War, the ‘germ cell’ of today’s globally successful business was created, a retail outlet called ‘Aquarium am Kreuzberg’ (‘Kreuzberg Aquarium’). Besides developing one of the first flake foods in the industry, the founder also developed medical products and was the first to breed brine shrimp. This was of interest to not just the business but the entire industry, as from that moment aquarists could grow their own live food source for the animals they were breeding. Following many more innovations and with the product range expanding, his son-in-law Viktor Pinders joined the company in 1968 and took control of sales management. Today Dohse Aquaristics employs almost forty staff and distributes over 1,000 products for fresh- and seawater aquaria and terraria throughout the world, under the brand names HOBBY Aquariatics, HOBBY Terraristics, Dupla and DuplaMarin.

Nano Aquaristics

Once again, Dohse Aquaristics has collated items from the renowned HOBBY Aquaristics range that are also ideally suited to nano tanks under their own 'Nano Aquaristics’ heading on the home page. Aquabranch artificial branch sections fitted with suckers are especially popular. Supplied with real or artificial plants, the Aquabranch can be attached to the glass panels of the aquarium. This decorates the tank nicely, without taking up a large proportion of the small bottom surface available in nano tanks.

Dohse Aquaristics has an air-operated interior filter designed specially for nano tanks. This means that invertebrates such as shrimps and snails are not damaged by entering the filter, as they are with motor-operated filters that have rotating impellers.

From the end of July, Dohse Aquaristics will be offering two sizes of clay tube-turret, the Prawn Pyramid, which can be used as a hideaway and retreat for invertebrates.

Artificial holestones

“The things that are currently selling best in my shop are artificial holestones,” says Thomas Engels, owner of Aqua-Treff in Moers, who is well-known outside of his own town for his large selection of East African cichlids. Dohse Aquaristics, renowned for its Yugoslavian, Asiatic and Turkish holestones, enhanced its product range at the beginning of the year by adding artificial holestones. “Initially we were concerned that we would sell fewer real holestones, but we didn’t want the business to miss out on strong demand,” explains Oliver Drewes, buyer and product developer for Dohse Aquaristics. “The benefits are obvious. These days, artificial decorations are made to look deceptively real. All the items are supplied as they appear in the catalogue or on the home page, and the five types are formed in such a way that many of the items in the range are not immediately recognised for what they are. Furthermore artificial holestones are very light, yet stable in the aquarium, as water flows through the boreholes and fills the spaces within the stone. And if algae grows on them the items can just be put in the dishwasher (without dishwasher tabs).”

 

New HOBBY Aquaristics catalogue

Dohse Aquatistics presents its current range of fresh-, seawater and garden pond products in a 48-page catalogue. The range has recently been extended with numerous artificial and natural decorations, filter materials, accessories, temperature controllers, cooling units and merchandising materials. After these have been mailed to all our specialist outlet clients, end users will be able to download the catalogue in pdf format, or order a free copy to be sent to them by post. There is also a new e-magazine version that can be seen online.

Innovative dual-circuit temperature controller

The Biotherm pro system is added to the program. With this innovative measuring instrument, you have the option to control the water temperature + substrate temperature or the water temperature + timer switch. The temperature can be controlled in increments of 0.2° C. It is possible to switch from heating to cooling mode. The timer control can switch at one-second intervals. All slots can be manually switched on and off manually. It is possible to set a visual and an audible alarm. The display showing all desired and actual values can be illuminated. A control strip for two slots with LED status indication, as well as a temperature sensor and a humidity sensor are included in delivery. A memory function provides protection against loss of data in the event of a power failure.

Filter pads that can be cut to size

Dohse Aquaristik adds a fine and a coarse variant of filter foam (22 mm thick) in the sizes 16x16 cm and 19x19 cm to its product range. This filter foam is suitable for all standard filters. Filter fleece (25 mm thick) is supplied pre-cut to 17.5x17.5 cm and 20x20 cm. A 1.5 cm thick carbon fleece, 20x80 cm in size, has been added to this range. It can also be cut to size, easily and cost-efficiently, to suit your particular requirement.

Spiral cleaning brush and cleaning brush set

At the fair in Kassel, Dohse Aquaristik presents a new 150 cm long spiral cleaning brush with a diameter of 20 mm, as well as a set consisting of three 37 cm long cleaning brushes with a diameter of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 cm respectively.

Apart from the roll-off box for aquarium hoses so convenient for vendors, Dohse Aquaristik now also offers convenient sets of cut-to-length hoses for the end customer. 4/6 air hoses, 9/12, 12/16, and 16/22 drain hoses, as well as 4/6 silicone hoses with stopper are all supplied to traders pre-cut to a length of 3 metres respectively.

Innovative water conditioner

Easy Fit is a water conditioner and water care agent of the newest generation which is made entirely of natural ingredients without any chemical additives and has been used successfully for years in fish and shrimp farming, as well as aquacultures, to optimise the water quality. Easy Fit can be used without restrictions in fresh water and sea water aquariums, as well as in garden ponds. Easy Fit makes aquarium water crystal clear and eliminates unpleasant odours. The highly active capacity to bind and absorb nitrogen compounds, various heavy metals, chlorine and medicinal residues make this preparation a perfect care tonic for fishkeeping. Easy Fit is supplied in 250, 500 and 1.000 ml containers.

 

New hall for Dohse Aquaristik

June 2008. Healthy growth and a steady extension of the product range have made it necessary for Dohse Aquaristik, Gelsdorf, to construct a new warehouse with space for a further 1.500 pallets. Apart from the HOBBY aquaristics products, Dohse has also made a name for itself with terraristics products in the past 10 years, surprised the sector 5 years ago with the takeover of the Dupla brand, and this year has already introduced a wide range of products to the market under the new brand DuplaMarin. Viktor Pinders, son-in-law of the company founder Hans Dohse and father of the managing partner Axel Pinders, identified a certain continuity with regard to these periodic leaps in development. Ten years after the move to Bonn Lengsdorf in 1978, an extension of the building followed in 1988. Another 10 years passed and the company moved again, this time to Gelsdorf County, in 1998. Here it continued the tradition and built a new warehouse - exactly ten years later.

New pond products

At the start of the pond season, Dohse Aquaristik introduces its new product HOBBY Thread Algae Killer. Thread algae are immediately and effectively eliminated by the destruction of their cell membranes caused by the release of oxygen. Active bacteria then quickly decompose the dead algae. The 225g pack is sufficient for a pond of 5,000 litres. New in the range is also a digital pond thermometer which does not need to be lifted out of the water as the reading can be taken from above. Battery, peg and 2.5m fastening cord are included in delivery.
